What is Graphic Design?

According to the United States Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition entry for Graphic Designers:

Graphic designers—or graphic artists—plan, analyze, and create visual solutions to communications problems. They find the most effective way to get messages across in print and electronic media using color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print and layout techniques.

In some ways graphic design is an invisible art. Good graphic design enhances the information in such a way that the information takes center stage. Done correctly good graphic design leads you through the information without detracting from it. Bad graphic design sticks out and gets in the way of communication, it is only when it detracts from the message that we notice the design work.

Expert visual communication is a dedicated profession that takes knowledge, practice and dedication. The tools of a modern graphic designer are widely available, like a mechanic’s or carpenter’s tools, without the proper knowledge the results will vary. Trying to solve difficult problems without expert help may cost the do-it-yourselfer more to fix in the long run.  A professional can help refine the message of printed material and tailor the communication the audience.
